A promise to a veteran and friend
Years ago, I started a two-page site that I dedicated to my father, a 540th Combat Engineer. But never in my wildest imaginings, could I see what the future beheld. Those pages of hard-fought information, turned into hundreds of pages, and encounters with veterans, their families and friends, and spontaneous friendships around the world with WWII historians, and others with the same avid interests.
One of the veterans I met was a man named Hugh, who was a member of Co E, 504 PIR, 82nd Airborne Division. He had a dream to share his history and knowledge online, so I designed a website for him, and made a promise that even after he left us, I would carry it forward. I have kept that promise, and this week, I am revising his site and moving it to a Word Press host. I hope to have it completed within a week, and when I do so will share the link (it’s down temporarily).
So, to Hugh and all the other veterans who have passed before us, I salute you. The honor was all mine.
P.S. I am also redesigning the VI Corps site (my dad’s), although that’s a much BIGGER project and will probably take me several months in the making. Eventually all my sites will be moved to Word Press, and I can finally sell my server.
Note: I’m pleased to say Hugh’s site was launched minutes ago on March 1, 2024. You can view it here.
