Leaving Twitter – Permanent Hiatus?

After much thought, I left Twitter behind last night. I’ll admit it was a bit scary and that I shed a few tears, but it was something that was a long time in the making. I decided to keep my account because it’s directly connected to my book, etc., but will no longer be an active participant on the TL. However, I will keep in touch with close MOOTS via DMs.

While I made many wonderful friends via the bird app, after four years I finally realized that not only had I fallen into the trap of social media, but Twitter was never a receptive home for my book. Even though I have over 1700 followers, only a few dozen close friends assisted me in spreading the news about Discovering BTS an unexpected journey, and/or wanting to collect new stories for the follow-up. Posts often followed this trend.

Not very impressive, no?

So instead of banging my head against the wall and continuing to fight a losing battle, I moved on. While I have an account on Instagram (not very fond of), I decided to try Mastodon as an avenue for my book. A new venue. A new outlook. A chance to make new acquaintances.

You can find me – @MondayMarionJ@apobangpo.space or simple look for my profile name, Discovering BTS. Borahae!

Follow-up Jan 27, 2023

One week later… The change has been good for me. Was I tempted to revisit the TW timeline? Sure, I won’t lie. They say it takes at least two weeks to make or break a habit, but it looks like I’m well on my way. I can honestly say, I don’t miss Twitter, their silly and ever-changing algorithms, the repetitive nonsense on the timeline, the growing hateful nature of the posts, the incessant numbers game (we must be 1st in everything – trend, trend, trend) and just the overall mood.

And praise to Apobangpo (a sub on the Mastodon server) for their well-structured format. Number one on the list? No algorithms. Posts appear chronologically. There’s also easy to use filters. I never get lost or bogged dog in the minutiae. Furthermore liking someone’s post (toot) doesn’t raise its status, you are simply telling the person, hey I really like this. It’s not a popularity contest (goodbye high school). Secondly, no advertising. You don’t realize how aggravating that is until it’s gone.

I feel quite comfortable at my new home and look forward to what it has to offer. Thank you Apobangpo/Mastodon.
