She’s Leaving Home

She’s Leaving Home

Several months ago, I watched Rick Beato’s breakdown of The Beatles, She’s Leaving Home, and as always, enjoyed the specific points that made him love the song, whether it was the chord progressions, the opening of the song or the use of notes not in a particular chord (passing notes). Then tonight I happened to run across Virgin Rock’s reaction to the same song. While praising Rick’s video and his thoughts on the composition, she stressed different reasons that made the song memorable for her.

And what I took away from this was that no matter, it’s what catches your ear, your attention and makes it special to you. Of course, both of them were right; how could we disagree? But what it does is make us think about the song from many different angles. And it’s what makes music so wonderful. Each of us can take away something different after hearing a series of notes. It’s the freedom that melody brings to the listener.

So, watch both of these videos. What’s your take?

I really like both because for me, not knowing anything about making music, they are both very educational. Rick is very easy to follow. Virgin was a struggle to listen to but once she made her point it was fascinating. I’ve heard the same from others about notes through the years.
For me the song is theatrical and brings so much emotion to the listener because the music perfectly hangs on the words bringing profound emotion that expresses the feeling of the human struggle between parent and child as they grow and separate in the course of life.
(but don’t worry…she’ll be back home with her love when she needs money for the wedding🤣)
