The scam to get free advertising
I’ve been running a popular history site called, VI Corps Combat Engineers of WWII. It’s dedicated to my father and his fellow engineers, and came to life in 2004. Since its inception, many companies have attempted to get FREE advertising through several ploys, and today was no exception.
A typical letter begins,
Greetings Marion,
I’m sending you an email in regards to your page: http://www.6thcorpscombatengineers.com/linksTributeVeterans.htm
I’ve been researching World War II the past few days and came across your website. I wanted to email and say your site was quite helpful. I noticed that this link wasn’t working for me though: — “Lest We Forget” – http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/5433/index.html
If you wanted to remove that dead link, this page might be a good replacement/addition: “The Cars, Tanks and Airplanes of WWII” – (link left off – I’m certainly not going to promote them).
I hope I could help!! I know your web page helped me!
Lauren

Why would I object, you ask? Because the site is not a WWII site. No, they are sites such as mortgage or title companies. They simple include a page on their web, with a few general interest WWII links, thinking that I will fall for the nonsense, and give them FREE advertising. It will look something like this.

I’m positive that have other articles on their site too. Maybe a page related to “Save the Whales”, or other great causes, tempting people to add their link to your website. Just be leery. They can be quite sneaky.
