The importance of reviews

As an independent, self-published author, I realize the value of book reviews. As many of us say, “Reviews are our bread and butter!” Without the aid of huge publishing companies like Penguin Random House, Harper Collins, and Simon and Schuster, we have to be our own advertisers and publicists. Therefore, our eyes light up when we see a new review on Amazon. It lets others who are searching for new reading material, know that our book might be a viable candidate. “Oh look, this book has 102 four and five-star reviews. Let’s give it a try.”

Reviews provide legitimacy!

And we do realize that not everyone is a writer, so if that’s holding you back, it’s okay just to rate a book from 1-5. However, if you leave a sentence or two, (or more), it’s highly appreciated.  It may not only influence a potential buyer(s) but may be beneficial in other ways.

  • The more reviews, the higher it will appear in Amazon’s search results. This means more people will see your book and potentially purchase it.
  • Honest feedback can benefit an author.
  • If you’re looking to have your book selected by a major publishing house, they do consider Amazon reviews. Many successful authors have been discovered and later secured conventional publishing deals.
  • Many promotional sites require a certain number of good reviews for eligibility.
  • Etc.

Other ways you can help an author? Spread the news by word of mouth. Talk about the book on social media and leave a link to their website, Facebook page, etc. “Like” their posts and follow them. Your efforts are welcome and valued.

P.S. This also applies to blogs. Hint, hint! If you love my blog, please share it with others. Thanks, friends.
