Nordic Spirits and Grill
The bar located exactly three miles north of our home, has undergone several iterations since our move to the country from Detroit, in 2002. This one is the best and an absolute treat to visit, Wednesday through Sunday. Located at 5827 M-76 in Alger, MI, it’s a homey place that always makes you feel welcome. Clean, nicely decorated with a Nordic feel (think Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) and the friendliest service provided by owners Lisa and Steve, and their superb wait staff, including Melisa, their talented cook. Don’t believe me, just look at their reviews.

After the bar sat empty for more than two years, many of us wondered how long it would be before someone was brave enough to purchase the property and breathe new life into its four walls. Sigh! Then along came a couple from down state, who had the courage to give it a try. They spent several months painting and preparing, putting in long and tedious hours by themselves. Trust me, it was worth the wait.
I remembered my first anxious visit. Would we like the new owners? Would we feel comfortable with the new surroundings? How was the food? The answers to all our questions were immediately answered after one visit. And the following visit sealed the deal.

Initially greeted by Steve (his family actually hails from the Nordic country), a smiling, outgoing man complete with long hair and beard, we immediately took a shine to his infectious smile. Next up, we met his lovely wife Lisa, whose enthusiasm drew us in. Both took the time to chat with us and it was great getting to know them over the next few weeks and months.
However, things weren’t going smoothly for the two, behind the scenes. As anyone with aging parents knows, life can get demanding, especially if said parents don’t live nearby. Long story short; being devoted children, Steve and Lisa decided to close their establishment in order to take care of their parent’s failing health. Then after thinking long and hard, they eventually placed the bar up for sale. While heartbreaking for them and for their patrons, they did what they thought was best.
However, after being closed for nearly two years, to everyone’s surprise and delight, they reopened. Unfortunately, the decision to remove the for sale sign was due to the passing of their parents. But being steadfast in their dedication to wonderful service, they made further changes to the bar and grill, making it into an even better place before welcoming everyone back.
So, if you live in the Alger, MI area (located between West Branch and Standish) or are just up for a visit, stop on in for some tasty food, Friday night Karaoke, and friendly tidings. They also have live music on occasion and during the summer, outdoor events under the northern stars. Don’t forget about their weekly specials, including tacos, ribs, chili dogs and more. They also offer Keno, along with a variety of canned, bottled, and tap beer and a fine selection of spirits. We guarantee it’s worth your while. Make sure to tell them that Lee and Marion sent you their way.
