May 2024 Aurora
Last night’s historic geomagnetic storm produced auroras as far south as the Florida Keys and Puerto Rico. The storm is subsiding, but it’s not over. At least one more significant CME is on the way, and it could push the storm back to G4/G5 levels. For more info consult Spaceweather.com – dates 5-10 and 5-11- 2024.
I’ve seen them at least three times, but the best was in Green Bay, Wisconsin. My cousins called me outside, and there I stood, transfixed. It was stunning, unbelievable, enthralling and beautiful. After they went back in the house, I stayed outside. I couldn’t take my eyes off the heavens. The universe put on one hell of a show. So, when my friend Heather posted about the storm’s growing intensity, yesterday, I eagerly awaited the coming evening.
However, my trip to my friend’s house (it’s darker there) was a failure. I was so geeked since it’s been EONS since I’ve the aurora borealis but alas, it was not to be. What did I see? A dim curtain-like whitish haze. “There’s something there!” I watched the skies for approximately thirty minutes and upon heading for home, clouds were rolling in. I feel cheated. And today will be no better because we are having a rainy weekend. Marion is SAD! So, so SAD!
