My Detroit Lions

My Detroit Lions

I got into football in high school, thanks to a great gym teacher. When we moved into our new building in tenth grade, some of it was still under construction, so classroom instruction became the norm. That’s when she said, if you are going to the Friday night games, then you need to understand the rules and regs and…

So, I not only went to our local games, but got into college and NFL, too. That’s when I became a Detroit Lions fan and trust me, being one was never an easy venture, because for the most part we were the runt of the National Football League. But we were die-hard and no matter how bad things got, we always kept our chins up and still held hope through several coaches throughout the years. There’s a great story my husband always tells.

Years ago, when we still lived in Detroit, my husband would attend games with friends. One Sunday, the game was so bad that he joked that it was the first time they had to sneak booze “out of the stadium” as they headed for the doors before the end of the match.

Statistics don’t lie – The Detroit Lions Record

However, the Lions began to roar again when head coach, Dan Campbell, moved into town on January 20, 2021. Even though many poo-pooed him from the start, I believed in him and saw the transition from week to week, then season to season. 2021 was the same season that saw our beloved QB get traded to LA in exchange for Jared Goff. That was a real shake-up. While I was sad to see him go, I knew it was his long over-due chance to get to the playoffs and the Superbowl, and he did!

The same people who dismissed Campbell, were the same ones who had no faith in Goff, but once again, I sensed that this duo along with a change in game play and some stellar players, along with defensive and offensive coordinators Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson, respectively, were going to light a spark that long ago had fizzled.

They say, good things come to those who wait, and heaven only knows that we had paid our dues, a hundred time over! Now look at us, we’re the team that many envy and strive to be. Even with over a dozen players on the injury list, unable to play, including some of our best offensive guys, we still have a 12 and 2 record in late December and a never-ending spirit de corps.
