I recently read an Instagram post and blanched when the writer emphatically stated that, “Men and women cannot be friends!” No ifs, ands or buts! I guess I wasn’t surprised, since I’ve learned over the months that he sees everything in life in black and white, and yes or no. I asked myself the question, why DO I “follow” him on social media? Maybe it’s for shock value? Anyway, I digress…
Unfortunately, I could never have a grey parrot or any other bird for that matter, because on a scale of 0-5, I ranked a 4+ when I was recently allergy tested. However, that doesn’t preclude me from watching hours of YouTube videos of my favorite bird, Gizmo.
Earlier this year I began watching videos of Gabe, an autistic and nonverbal (now) thirteen-year-old, who immediately touched my heart with his love of music, his earnest smile and his kind eyes. It brought tears to my eyes each time I saw him “communicate” with his mother, Nikki and the few individuals he allows into his world, including his babysitter, Gaby, his grandfather, his physical trainer, and a new autistic friend.
My husband and I follow many of the animal channels on YouTube and recently I’ve added the Asher House to my list. This man has a heart of gold and brings so much joy to the animals in his care …
